Northern Electric Baby Champ Model 5110-M

The Model 5110M was basically a Model 5110 modified in one or two important ways. All possessed an antenna consisting of a spool of serial wire rather than the built-in loop antenna of the Model 5110. This was the same spool first used in the Model 5002. In addition, Model 5110M examples from serial number 2930 on possessed a center knob which was a two-position tone control. Like the Model 5104 that followed it, the Model 5110M seemed to result from an effort to used up available parts. This model was offered in five cabinet colors: ivory, gold, green, blue, and rose. Apparently some of these radios were offered with brown knobs. An example appears on the cover of Northern Electric Service Bulletin RS 117(June, 1948).

1. The fan-shaped dial and one-armed pointer are used, but the part number (R16127-24) differs from the part number of fan-shaped dials used in some other models (16127-24). This fan dial contains lettering and numerals that are thicker than those of the R16127-24 dial. In addition there is one less dial marking at the 150 numeral that is present on the R16127-24 dial.

2. The back is attached to the chassis by rivets located in two lower holes. Two upper back holes are left open.

1. On the earlier examples, the "M" in the back model label appears to be red, while in later examples it is white.

2. Cabinets of examples before serial number 2930 were of the two hole type, while examples after were of the three whole type.

3. Only examples after serial number 2930 possessed a two position tone control.
