Northern Electric Baby Champ Model 5000
Model 5000
The Model 5000 was the first to be housed in the rainbow/waterfall cabinet and was manufactured in 1946. The Model 5000 was available in the brown and ivory version, but also interestingly in several attractive hammertone paint colors. According to Northern Electric Radio Service Bulletin RS 100A (May 1946), some modifications were made. From Serial No. 8105 on, a 0.22 megohm half watt resister wass added between the chassis and dommon return lead. From Serial No. 17693 on, the IF transformer design was changed with new part numbers. Tube Complement: 1. 12SA7: Converter
2. 12SK7: IF Amplifier
3. 12SQ7: 2nd Detector, AVC, 1st Audio Amplifier
4. 35L6GT: Output Amplifier
5. 35Z5GT: Rectifier

Features of 5000 models:
1. The airplane pointer are used on the dial. All Model 5000 used the R8142-24 clockwise dial. 2. A two-hole rainbow cabinet is used. 3. The right hole accommodates the tuning knob.. 4. The left hole accommodates the on/off switch and volume control. 5. A guarantee notice sticker is present on the bottom of the case. 6. The back is attached to the chassis by four slot screws. 7. The built-in loop antenna is attached to the back by staples. |
Variations found among 5000 models:
1. Speakers are found in two shapes: round and rounded square. Both speaker shapes are stamped with manufacturer's part No. R12791. 2. Screws attaching dial to chassis are of two types: slot and Robertson. 3. It seems based on the decals on the back, that Model 5000 examples can be catagorized as early, mid or late models. These radios were certified by the Canadian Standards Association (CSA) and a decal affixed. The CSA had changed its name from the Canadian Engineering Standards Association (CESA) in 1944, but was still apparently using old decals as late as 1946. Therefore, I believe that Model 5000 examples with a CESA decal were made before those with the CSA label. There are also differences in the other labels of the earlier vs. later Model 5000 examples. Only the later Model 5000 examples have the Baby Champ label on the back. One example (Col No 066) has a CESA decal but the other decals are those of more recent Model 5000 examples. Perhaps this places it somewhere between the earlier and later Model 5000 examples.. |
